History
Essentially, Itachi was a child prodigy, trained to be a ninja from the moment he was born. Traumatized by war at a very young age, he devoted himself to keeping the village peaceful, even if it meant eventually being ordered to murder his entire clan to prevent civil war. He left Sasuke alive, unable to kill him, fled his village in disgrace and hid amongst the criminal organization, Akatsuki, as a spy. Already dying, with a chronic, systemic disease eating away at his body, he let Sasuke achieve revenge at last. A tragic character, with a tragic life, finally met an equally tragic end.
Personality Description:
Itachi is a gentle man, a pacifist, not a killer. He will incapacitate instead of kill whenever possible, and as such, the lives he has taken weigh heavily on his heart. (One look at City #3 and its ghosts, and I feel Itachi would have found a fitting home.) He cares deeply for Sasuke, protecting him being the driving motivation for his entire life.
Other Notes:
As a big fan of the medical world, I do play Itachi as he is suffering from his illness (a topic I’ve actually presented on at an anime convention). Please don’t be offended. There is strength in weakness, and growth in vulnerability – something which drew me to the character of Itachi in the first place.

Example journal entry (first person):
It is ironic, perhaps, that this is the day I have been longing for… the death I have been living for.
It’s not that Sasuke is strong enough to kill me. No, I’ve been watching him grow, learn and progress, but he still struggles. His jutsu is powerful, but wasteful. And he has yet to awaken the mangekyo sharingan, It is not perfect, but it is good enough. It will have to be good enough, because death is coming, whether Sasuke reaches me or not.
I thought I could stave off the disease for a little while longer. I thought Sasori’s last batch of medicine would quell the burning in my chest and ease the pain in my joints. It took the edge off, but every time I cough, I taste blood in the back of my throat. My heart is weak. It gets harder and harder to breathe, especially at night. I haven’t slept well in days.
Kisame’s worried. He keeps saying I’m unfit for combat and he’s right. But that’s why I have to fight. That’s why I have to face Sasuke now, before it’s too late. He needs revenge. He deserves revenge, and I have lived for eight long years just to give that to him.
